THIS POSITION IS PART TIME ONLY AND DOES NOT LEAD TO FULL TIME.
Hourly rate of this position is $15.31 to $19.90 per hour. Economic Assistants are paid this hourly rate depending on the number of scheduled hours.
This position is a permanent part-time position. Some weekend or evening hours will be required. The weekly hours of work vary, but are expected to average 16-32 hours per week. The average weekly and/or total hours may increase or decrease.
NOTE: Work in retail stores must be completed during normal business hours.
The position requires travel throughout pricing areas in Oahu including neighborhoods o! f all economic types.
This position has promotion potentia! l to the GS-07. Promotion Potential: There is no obligations to provide future promotions to you if you are selected. Future promotions are dependent on your ability to perform the duties at a higher level, the continuing need for an employee assigned to the higher level, and supervisory approval.
This position is inside the bargaining unit.
At least one (1) position will be filled through this vacancy. If additional vacancies become available, additional selections will be made.
Relocation costs will not be paid.

Subject to frequent travel. DUTIES:
Incumbent is responsible for the collection of primary data for the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Economic Assistants collect prices and related statistical data o! n a wide variety of commodities, services, and housing for the BLS Consumer Price Index. Data for commodities and services are collected by conducting personal and telephone interviews with store managers and buyers, managers in auto dealerships, doctors, pharmacists, and other professionals. Data for the housing survey are obtained by personal visit or telephone interview with either property managers, tenants, or home owners. Duties include, but are not limited to: Visiting retail and service establishments such as department stores, supermarkets, medical offices and hotels to collect retail price data; contacting homeowners, renters, and apartment management companies by personal visit to neighborhood and follow up telephone interviews; and collecting and entering data on a hand held computer and obtaining voluntary cooperation from survey responders. The position requires travel throughout pricing areas of Oahu including neighborhoods of all economic types. During the f! irst year, travel to Washington office is necessary for training. There! will be 1 two-week trip, and 1 one-week trip. Additional travel outside of local area may be necessary, as needed, for training. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level OR successful completion of a full 4- year course study with major study in economics, or 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as business law, statistics, algebra, pre calculus, calculus, or economics. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must demonstrate the applicant's ability to perform research or related work that involved collecting, compiling, verifying, analyzing, or reporting data. Direct contact with, and direct sales to the public is a plus. Examples of qualifying experience may includ! e: Significant experience in retail sales, cold-calling sales, real estate sales or management, survey or marketing work, interviews or in take workers, jobs or volunteer experience that required detail record keeping, jobs or volunteer experience that required oral persuasion skills, jobs or volunteer experience that involved public contact. Examples of specialized experience include:

  • experience with directly collecting surveys, e.g.,census, fund raising;
  • experience in retail environments, such as clerks in large grocery stores and associates in large retail outlets;
  • specific knowledge of a wide variety of assorted products and or service(s) offered by an outlet;
  • knowledge of products and service specifications;
  • real estate experience in selling and public outreach, e.g., open house showings;
  • specific knowledge of area sales and housing stock, pricing and customer base;
  • general knowledge of constantly chang! ing consumer marketing practices;
  • knowledge consumer product a! nd service terminology and characteristics;
  • using good skill in communicating, both orally and in writing and using personal computers and application such as windows-based software application, email and the internet.
